Side Pony dives into deep and diverse territory with their new EP titled “That Plus Weird.” Taking favorite bits of the members’ own musical histories and throwing in Seattle-flavored deviations, the two have created tracks that span disco-y dance cuts, r&b slow jams, and west coast bangers. The songs are moody yet fun and and lyrically dense while also totally catchy and always witty. The two even step away from the durable duo setup for two temperamental solo jams “Seagull” and “817.”
As an opener to the EP, Side Pony serves up the whirling jam, “Ride with Us.” With content influenced by the natural world as well as childhood favorite “The Lion King,” this cut is a smooth intro to emcee BangBang’s frank, unaffected delivery and Kristin’s Smartie-sweet vocals.
Soon as you’re comfortable with the ladies, they lead you down the warpath for the simmering ode to haters, “Naysayers.” This Jay Battle-produced beat is sure to make your trunk knock and the dramatic melodies sure to get you bitterly singing along.
The only feature on the EP is brought to you by Adra Boo of Seattle’s Fly Moon Royalty on the make-you-go-ham jam, “BOP!”
Despite today’s ADHD tendencies, Side Pony’s “That Plus Weird” EP takes so many bold, soulful turns that the listener can’t help but hang on for the ride.
